KINGSTON, Ont. --
Elizabeth Wendel tallied 19.5 points as Trinity Western swept McGill 3-0 at the Queen's Invitational women's volleyball preseason tournament in the ARC Gymnasium, Saturday. The set scores were 25-19, 29-27 and 25-19.
The result snapped McGill's win streak at five and marked only their second loss in seven outings. The Spartans, a tall team and perennial powerhouse, have won two national titles in the past three years.
Trinity Western had a 45-26 advantage in kills, a 45-37 margin in digs, and a 4-3 edge in service aces.
"We played quite a good game," said Martlets head coach
Rachele Beliveau despite the loss. "It's the first time we've played a team at that high level of competition this season. We needed to make some adjustments. There were things we did really well against such a tall team and things we need to do better. But it was nice to play in such a challenging game."
Wendel, a native of Caronport, Sask., earned her points on the strength of 15 kills and nine blocks.
Emilie Matte de Grasse, a 5-foot-10 power hitter from Montreal, led McGill with 12 kills and a stuff block for 12.5 points. The education junior also had a team-high nine digs.
Freshman
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., followed with six kills, eight digs, and four assists.
Mila Krunic, a math sophomore from Oakville, Ont., recorded five points, courtesy of two kills, one ace, and a team-high four blocks.
"It was a great match against McGill," said Spartans coach
Ryan Hofer. "Like Friday's game, we kept exploring different lineups and looking at the different strengths that we have. It was also just a chance to get the girls some game play. It's good competition here and it's been good to play some teams that we don't normally see."
The Martlets (6-2) take on Queen's on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last week's Citadins Invitational, where McGill swept the Gaels 3-0. Trinity Western can win the tourney by beating UNB on Sunday.
