Shooting woes continue as Redmen cagers stung at home

MONTREAL – Jaleel Webb, a second-year transfer guard from Pierrefonds, Que., scored a team-high 21 points to help Concordia upset the No.4 ranked McGill Redmen 68-57 in an ugly college hoops affair at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The win gave Concordia  a critical sweep of the week's home-and home series thst catapulted them into first place in the RSEQ conference with a 6-4 record. The Redmen (5-3), who have now dropped three in a row, find themselves two points behind their crosstown rival but have two games in hand.

Webb was lights out from downtown, going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. He added two other field goals and went a perfect 5-for-5 from the line. Teammate Ken Beaulieu also impressed and was equally as hot, going 7-for-11 from the floor, 2-for-5 from three-point land and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe for 20 points in total.

The Stingers dominated almost the entire game. They led 17-9 after the opening frame and 31-23 at halftime. Concordia kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter, boosting their lead to 53-40 heading into the final period. McGill managed to give them a late scare, narrowing the gap to 62-57 with a 61 seconds left but ran out of time down the stretch.

"This is a test for our team," said McGill bench-boss David DeAveiro. "We haven't had one of these (slumps) in awhile, where we have lost consecutive games and shot so poorly. We are going to learn a lot about our team over the next couple of weeks."

For the Redmen, Vincent Dufort and Tychon Carter-Newman led the way 12 points apiece. Dufort, a fifth-year team captain, also had eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Carter-Newman, a graduate student and transfer from Laurentian came off the bench and added three steals, a pair of assists and two rebounds.

Dele Ogundokun and Jenning Leung, two starters and among the team's top scorers, both struggled from the field, shooting a combined 4-for-25.

McGill, which had a slight 31-30 rebounding advantage, shot a rough 30.3 per cent from the floor (20/66) and only made four of 27 treys, compared to Concordia, which connected on 41.5 per cent (22/53) and made six of 15 from beyond the arc.  A lone bright spot for the Redmen was the turnover battle. They forced the Stingers into 25 miscues compared 14 of their own.

The Redmen will have an opportunity to get back on track when they face the last-place Bishop's Gaiters (1-6) on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in Love Competition Hall. It will be the front end of a home-and-home set with their rivals from Lennoxville.
