Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ryne Bondy

No.2 ranked Redmen play lead role in "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight" as win streak unravels in college hoops

QUEBEC CITY -- In a performance better suited for the 1971 film "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight" -- which starred a young Robert De Niro -- the No.2-ranked McGill men's basketball team came up firing blanks as their six-game win streak fizzled with a shocking 73-52 setback to unranked Laval at the Amphithéâtre-gymnase Desjardins, Saturday.

The win catapulted Laval (4-4) into a three-way tie for second place in the RSEQ conference. The Redmen (5-1) are only two points ahead of Concordia, UQAM and Laval, with each trying to chase down the reigning regular season RSEQ champs from McGill.

It was a sloppy game that featured a combined 84 missed field-goals and 31 turnovers. Nothing went right for McGill which
shot just 29.9 per cent from the floor (20/67), made six of 24 from the three-point arc (6/24) and drained a disappointing six of 19 from the free-throw line.

The Rouge et Or took advantage of the dismal McGill offensive production, outscoring them 27-16 in the opening quarter and 18-7 in the second stanza to take a 45-23 margin into halftime. Laval never looked back putting together a 21-point third quarter.

Three Redmen led the way in scoring, with Vincent Dufort, Dele Ogundokun and Tychon Carter-Newman all plateaued at the 10-point mark. Carter-Newman, who came off the bench, also added nine rebounds and four assists.

A pair of key McGill starters were were effectively shut down, namely Jenning Leung and Francois Bourque,  who went a combined for a 3-for-13 from the floor.

Laval shot 42.2 from the field and 32.1 from the arc, while draining 10 of 16 from the line.

McGill's schedule does not get any easier as they now have to start on the road at Concordia in a home-and-home set next weekend. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21.
