MONTREAL -- Goaltender
Marie-Pier Chabot made 37 saves and added five more in a post-overtime shootout victory as the third-ranked Montreal Carabins edged No.2 McGill 2-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.
It marked the 52nd rendezvous between these bitter archrivals. McGill owns a 38-14 record in those meetings but the Carabins hold a 13-11 edge in the last 24 matchups.
Carabins team captain
Marion Allemoz scored the only goal in the shootout to give her side the victory.
Montreal had opened the scoring at 12:51 of the first period when
Ariane Barker converted a crease-wide pass from
Catherine Dubois. McGill forced the overtime session when sophomore
Marie-Philip Lavoie tallied her second of the season and second in as many games. Defenceman
Erica Starnino drew an assist on the power-play marker.
The Martlets had a 38-33 edge in shots – including a 15-9 advantage in the third period – as goaltender
Taylor Hough took the loss, dropping to 6-3 on the season. It was only her fifth career loss in 26 regular season contests.
"I liked our game today, the girls played well but so did their goalie and we just couldn't get the puck in when we had our chances," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "Everybody's disappointed that we didn't win but holy smokes, I thought it was a heckuva hockey game."
The Martlets were 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Montreal was 0-for-1. Both teams failed to score on rare overtime PP opportunities. On McGill's odd-man chance late in overtime, Smith tried to call a time-out to give his top line a breather but for some reason, referee
Melanie Bordeleaux refused to allow it.
With the win, Montreal improved to 8-3-1 and took over first-place in the RSEQ conference. They sit precariously perched with 17 points, one ahead of Ottawa (8-4-0) and two ahead of McGill (7-3-1), who has one game in hand.
The Martlets and Carabins have met three times during the regular season with all three decided by one goal. McGill won the season opener 2-1 in a shootout at CEPSUM Arena on Oct. 23 and the Carabins took the rematch 4-3 at McConnell Arena on Nov. 7. They are scheduled to confront each other twice down the stretch: at Montreal on Jan. 29 at back at McConnell on Feb. 5.
Both teams will play next on Jan. 15, when McGill travels to Carleton (3-8-0) and the Carabins make the short jaunt to Concordia (3-7-2).
