OTTAWA -- Team captain
Melodie Daoust continued her all-out assault mode and potted a hat-trick as the visiting McGill Martlets, ranked No.3 in the nation, delivered a pitch-perfect performance en route to a 5-0 whitewash over Carleton at the CU Ice House, Friday.
It was the second straight shutout over Carleton for the Martlets, improving their overall record to 84-2-1 in 87 lifetime meetings.
McGill, which had a 41-18 edge in shots, led 1-0 after one and 2-0 after two before exploding in the final stanza for three markers.
Goaltender
Taylor Hough registered 18 saves for her league-leading fourth shutout of the season. The 5-foot-10 arts senior from Toronto improved her record to 7-3 in RSEQ play and 37-19 in 67 career appearances.
"We were good today, played hard, played the full 60 minutes and had good speed," said
Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets. "Huffy didn't get tested a lot in net but she was good on the PK."
The game was a very physical affair that resulted in a combined 28 penalty minutes, including 16 to the Martlets. McGill was 1-for-6 on the power-play and erased all seven shorthanded scenarios.
After
Gabrielle Davidson gave the Martlets a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period, Daoust made it 2-0 at 16:23 of the middle frame, 3-0 at 3:36 of the third and 5-0 with an unassisted effort in the final minute of the game.
Daoust, a 24-year-old physical education senior, leads the league and ranks second in the nation with a lofty 9-12-21 record in only 12 contests. In 94 career games overall with the Martlets, she has tallied a whopping 82 goals and 191 points.
Davidson, a dangerous sniper who got off to a very slow start this season, has quietly tabulated six goals in her last eight games. In 147 career games overall, she has posted a 115-81-196 record and needs just six points to become the sixth Martlets player in school history to reach the 200-point plateau.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Olivia Sutter, whose nifty shorthanded goal made it 4-0 at 10:12 of the final period, was her first of the regular season. The Martlets now lead the league with four shorties.
Sophomore goalie
Hailey Perreault made 36 saves in a losing cause for the Ravens and her record tumbled to 0-2. Carleton, which sits last in the RSEQ conference with a 3-9 record, will host Concordia (3-8-2) on Jan. 17.
McGill now sits second with an 8-3-1 record. They are two points behind the Montreal Carabins (9-3-1), who have played one more game. The Martlets will return to the nation's capital next weekend, when they have a rematch with Carleton, followed by Ottawa (8-4).
