MONTREAL -- Freshman Maxime Murdoch of Westmount, Que., scored three goals and added four assists as the McGill University men's lacrosse team with a resounding 23-0 whitewash over Concordia in the CUFLA season opener for both clubs, at Molson Stadium, Friday.
 
Murdoch, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound son of head coach Tim Murdoch, tallied in each of the first three periods before being pulled. A product of the Quebec provincial team and IMG Academy in Florida, he was one of 18 different Redmen to score. Senior attackman Rhys Burnell also netted a hat-trick, accomplishing the feat in the opening quarter.

McGill had a 55-5 edge in shots against a struggling Concordia club that fielded only 13 players. The Redmen, considered by many to be the early-season favourite to win the league's Baggataway Cup championship, led 9-0 after the opening quarter, 15-0 at halftime and 20-0 by the end of the third quarter.

The starting defence was pulled after the first quarter, along with senior attackman Rhys Burnell and Spencer Bromley, who led the team in scoring last year. (excluding three who were injured).

"We took advantage of the lopsided score to play all 31 players who dressed," said Coach Murdoch, who had three other players sidelined with various  ailments. "This game allowed many freshmen to get acclimated and to perform at a high level. It was important that they saw develop as we expect to lose 16 seniors to graduation next spring, including all four co-captains (Rakoczy, Goodwin, Frost, Bjella),

Aside from the two hat-tricks, five players tallied twice, including Jake Gutman, Alex Beckes, Cyrus Wickersham, Shawn Fontaine and James Vickery. Rounding out the scoring with one goal apiece was Anders Bjella, Goose Bolton, Spencer Bromley, Louis-Charles Genereux, Quinton Bradley, Alex Linton and Bohe Hosking.

McGill goalies William Waesche and newcomer Conor Manahan shared the shutout. Waesche started and collected the victory, kicking aside all five shots faced in 40 minutes of work. Manahan played the second half and also made five saves.

Concordia freshman Philippe Carmant of Montreal, was saddled with the loss, making 28 saves while surrendering 23 goals.

McGill (1-0) will host the Ravens on Saturday (Sept. 12,  5 p.m.) at Molson Stadium.

REDMEN RAP: McGill has a grueling regular season schedule this year and is slated to play their first five games within a nine-day period from Sept 11-20.  "We always try to play a large number of CUFLA games in September to allow our players to have adequate time to prepare for mid-term exams," explained Murdoch. "That's why we have packed in so many September games."
