McGill engineering student wins bronze at U-23 world rowing championships in Bulgaria

PLOVDIV, BULGARIA --  Lucas de Gelder, a McGill University rower from Vancouver, B.C., won bronze at the under-23 world championships in Bulgaria, Saturday.

The 6-foot-5 mechanical engineering junior reached the podium in the men's coxless fours, which completed the 2,300-metre course in six minutes, 13.44 seconds. Romania won gold in 6:10.64, followed by Great Britain in 6:13.07. The USA was fourth in 6:14.48.

The Canadian quartet included Jakub Buczek of Kitchener, Ont., in the bow seat, followed by the 21-year-old de Gelder, then Mackenzie Copp of London, Ont., and David De Groot of St. Catharines, Ont., in the stroke seat.

Last November, de Gelder posted a fifth-place finish in the men's heavyweight singles at the 2014 Canadian University Rowing Association championships, held at Victoria, B.C.
