NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshman
Joe Snively of Herndon, Virginia scored once and added an assist as the Yale University Bulldogs skated to a 4-1 victory over McGill in a cross-border exhibition matchup between NCAA and CIS men's hockey teams before 3,215 at Ingalls Rink, Tuesday.
It was McGill's first game in 25 days, since a 4-3 road win at RMC on Dec. 4, while Yale hadn't played since a 3-2 decision over Boston University on Dec. 11. The Bulldogs, who improved to 7-4-2 overall (including a 3-3-2 mark in the ECAC), had a 37-23 edge in shots, including a 16-6 margin in the second period.
After a very entertaining but scoreless opening frame, Yale exploded in the middle period, netting three goals in a span of two minutes and 32 seconds. Senior
Charles Orzetti of Ridgewood, N.J., opened the floodgates at 10:07, followed by senior
Carson Cooper of Bow Island, Alta., at 11:44 and Sniveley at 12:39.
McGill narrowed the gap to 3-1 when newcomer
Christophe Lalonde -- a freshman from Mirabel, Que., who officially joined the team on Dec. 23 and was playing in his first collegiate game -- scored at 16:19, converting passes from
Simon Tardif-Richard and
Rock Regimbald.
"Chris showed good energy tonight," said McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes. "He was around the puck when it was in the offensive zone and had a good game for someone who has not played much hockey during the first half of the season."
Yale responded in the next stanza when rookie
Ted Hart was credited with a goal that deflected in from a point shot at 9:03.
A few minutes later, McGill centre
Liam Heelis appeared to have scored on high shot but the referee waived it off and play continued for another three minutes before the next whistle. Heelis then appealed to the officials, who agreed to review the video. After a lengthy five-minute delay in an off-ice video room, the referees returned to the ice and indicated that their original call stood.
"We had a really strong first period, controlled a good part of it and had some decent scoring chances," said Nobes. "But they outskated us in the second, beat us to a lot of loose pucks and had some sustained offensive zone play because of that. We gave up a couple of goals because of lost coverages in the D-zone, where they had quicker feet. The first goal was kind of a bad bounce but on the other two, we were beaten to the puck. I thought that we put together a good third period -- there was another bad bounce on their goal and then we had a disallowed goal."
Alex Lyon, a junior from Baudette, Minn., started between the pipes for Yale and saved all 11 shots faced before giving way at the midway mark to
Patrick Spano, a junior from Montreal, who kicked out 11 of 12 and was credited with the win.
McGill netminder
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made 33 saves in a losing cause -- many of them spectacular -- as his record dropped to 15-5 overall.
"One of the reasons that we come down here (to play NCAA teams) is to learn where we have to be better," added Nobes. "We didn't have any pace in the second period and that probably means we need to do a little more work off the ice."
No.2 ranked McGill, which dropped to 17-9 overall (including 15-2-1 in OUA play), plays at Holy Cross, another NCAA Div. 1 team, in Worcester, Mass., on Wednesday at 4 pm. Yale plays at UMass next Tuesday, a few days before heading to Arizona for the Desert Hockey Classic on Jan. 8-10.
