Sherbrooke suffers seventh deadly sin as Martlet volleyballers extend win streak

SHERBROOKE-- Catherine Amyot scored a game-high 16 points as the No.4-ranked McGill University women's volleyball team rallied from a one-game deficit to defeat Sherbrooke 3-1 at the Pavillion Univestrie, Sunday. It marked the 11th consecutive victory for the Martlets who improved to 19-2 overall, including a perfect 7-0 mark in RSEQ play. The set scores were 19-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-19.

"We are really playing like a true team," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "If someone has a bad sequence another will step up and get us the momentum back. We are also playing like a mature bunch and showing patience in our attack."

Amyot, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter from Ottawa, had 14 kills, two service aces and 16 digs. Teammate Emile Matte de Grasse was the only other Martlet to reach double figures in kills. The second-year physical education major put away 12 balls to go along with 20 digs, two assisted blocks and an ace.

Setter Yasmeen Dawoodjee continued her pace for a record-breaking season, posting a game-high 45 assists while adding eight digs and one ace.

McGill's defence was solid all night with four players reaching double figures in digs. Joining Matte de Grasse and Amyot in that department was Marie-Eve Dorion with 20 digs, while libero Majolaine Ste-Marie had 15.

Sarah-Jeanne Meunier-Bedard was the only Sherbrooke player to reach double digits in kills with a game-high 17. Overall, the Vert & Or had a rough night offensively with four players having negative hitting percentages.

The Martlets will now prepare for their toughest test of the season so as they travel across the mountain to take on second place Montreal (7-1) on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. McGill is 1-1 versus the Carabins in two pre-season tournament matchups so far this year.
