Loberg leads ladies, snags shutout as Stingers succumb to hockey Martlets

MONTREAL -- Sophomore goaltender Kayla Loberg made 22 saves to register her first career shutout as No.2-ranked McGill goosed the upstart Concordia Stingers 2-0 in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

McGill is now 71-38-3 in 112 lifetime meetings against their cross-town rivals since the CIS adopted women's hockey in 1997-98.

The whitewash was just what the doctor ordered for the Martlets, who appeared to refloat their ship after springing a leak of self-doubt the previous night, giving up four second-period goals in a 4-3 home loss to the top-ranked Montreal Carabins, a team that was beaten by Concordia in their season opener, two weeks ago.

Loberg, who was making her first career regular season start over her two seasons, came in to stop the bleeding in the aforementioned Friday night loss to Montreal. She blanked the Carabins, making 15 saves in her 27 minutes of play, then followed up with her first league win by blanking the Stingers.

"Kayla was good, made the key stops that she needed to make and we played real well in our own end," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "She managed the puck well, had good rebound control and did a nice job."

Team captain Melodie Daoust scored what proved to be the game-winner at 12:37 of the first period, converting passes from Cora Constantinou and rookie rearguard Zoe Todd.

Early in the middle stanza, while killing a penalty, Daoust chipped a puck out of her defensive zone, which found speedy sniper Gabrielle Davidson streaking down to the other end for breakaway, which she transformed into a shorthanded goal on a rocket-like slapshot past goalie Katherine Purchase to give the Martlets an insurance marker.

McGill, which had a slight 23-22 edge in shots, went 0-for-5 on the power-play, while the Stingers were scoreless in six tries.

The Martlets, who improved to 3-2 in RSEQ conference play, have a home-and-home series with Carleton (2-4) next weekend. They play in the nation's capital on Friday the 13th at 7 p.m., then McGill will host the Ravens on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m.
