Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Ravens outpeck Martlets in battle of birds, to collect second lifetime win over McGill

OTTAWA -- Forward Becky Davidson of Delburne, Alta,, scored a second-period goal and goaltender Katelyn Steele pulled-off a 35-save shutout as Carleton finally shed the monkey off their backs to pull off a stunning 1-0 upset over No.3-ranked McGill in CIS women's hockey at the CU Icehouse, Friday.

The result snapped Carleton's 19-game losing streak to McGill in regular-season play and marked only the second victory in 85 lifetime confrontations with the Martlets, who have a strangleholding 82-2-1 overall record in head-to-head matchups, including a 40-1-1 mark in the nation's capital.

Davidson tapped a blocked Hedda Gjerde shot past fallen McGill netminder Kayla Loberg at 15:29 of the middle frame for what stood up as the game-winning goal. Despite the loss, Loberg, whose record dropped to 1-1, lowered her league leading goals-against average (0.41) and save percentage (.980).

Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power-play.

"Our third period was awesome but the first two periods were lackadaisical. We can't continually play just 20 minutes in a hockey game and expect to be successful against anybody in our conference," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, whose troops had a 35-14 advantage in shots on net, including 16-6 in the final stanza. "In the old days, we might have been able to get away with that but not any more. This league is now a strong one and fairly level."

Proof positive of the coach's remarks: Concordia upset the division-leading Carabins 1-0 on Friday, for the second time this season.

The Martlets now find themselves perched in fourth place with a 3-3 record, three points out of first but only two points shy of the cellar-dwelling Ravens (2-4). McGill and Carleton will cross paths again on Sunday (3 pm), at McConnell Arena.

MARTLET MURMURS: Despite being kept off the scoresheet for the first time this season, Martlets team captain Melodie Daoust continues to lead the RSEQ conference in scoring with a 3-5-8 record in six contests... Two-time league scoring leader Gabrielle Davidson is off to a bit of a slow start with a 1-2-3 record... Hard to believe but the Martlets have yet to score this season with the extra attacker and are now 0-for-21 after six games... On the bright side, they have killed of 90.5 per cent of their penalties (19 of 21) and have also tallied a pair of shorthanded goals.
