Amyot awesome against Acadia Axewomen as McGill merits volleyball victory

HALIFAX, NS -- Catherine Amyot scored a game-high 18.5 points, leading the No.7 ranked McGill University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Acadia at the interlocking league tournament -- between the AUS and RSEQ conferences -- held at the Homburg Centre, Saturday.

The set scores were 25-12, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-17.

The Martlets swept all three tourney contests over the weekend, improving their sensational record to 22-4 overall, including 10-2 in league play. McGill is now 57-8 against the Atlantic conference since interlocking play was initiated in 2008

"We played very well through the middle today and over the entire weekend," said Rachele Beliveau, in her 25th season as head coach of the Martlets. "The maritime teams like to play high balls and powerfull balls, so we ran a lot of stuff through the middle and we scored more than 50 per cent there. We played outstanding defence again, which helped us stay in each game. We also did quite well in blocking, were very consistent and that was one of our goals."

Amyot racked up 14 kills, four aces and an assisted block, to go along with 15 digs. She is ranked 14th among CIS leaders with an average of 3.40 kills per set. Amyot was joined by a pair of teammates who also reached double figures, namely Myriam Robitaille (17.5 points) and Erika Cournoyer (13.0). Robitaille registered a game-high 16 kills, one ace, a dig and an assisted block, while Cournoyer collected nine kills, one ace and three stuff blocks.

Teammate Yasmeen Dawoodjee, a fifth-year setter, contributed 40 assists, one kill, a pair of aces and three blocks. She is ranked third among CIS assist-per-game leaders with an average of 10.17.

Marjolaine Ste-Marie, who recorded 11 digs, is ranked fourth among CIS dig leaders at 4.53 per game.

The Axewomen actually had a 28-24 edge in kills and the teams were equal in aces with nine apiece, McGill had a 6-5 edge in stuff blocks and a 77-64 advantage in digs,

Acadia, which sits fifth in the AUS conference with a 1-6 record, plays UQAM (3-6) later this evening.

The Martlets (10-2) moved into sole possession of first place in the RSEQ conference, two points ahead of Sherbrooke (9-3) and four points ahead of the Montreal Carabins (8-2), who were upset 3-1 by Dalhousie and will make up two games in hand tomorrow. McGill closes out the first semester next weekend when they host the Carabins in a key matchup at Love Competion Hall on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m.
