MONTREAL -- It may not have been an Oscar-worthy performance but sophomore
Noah Daoust penned a pretty good script as the No.3-ranked McGill men's basketball squad collected their eighth consecutive victory with a convincing 74-58 performance over the UQAM Citadins at their Centre sportif, Saturday.
The Redmen trailed 3-2 in the first few minutes but regained the lead and never looked back. They held a 13-11 advantage after the opening quarter, expanded it to 38-27 at the half and 54-44 after three, then outscored the Citadins 20-14 down the stretch.
Daoust, a 6-foot-7, 233-pound centre from Dorval, Que., came off the bench to register a game-high 18 points on a red-hot 6-for-8 shooting performance from the field, including an impressive 4-for-5 effort from three-point range. The 20-year-old industrial relations major drained both of his free-throw attempts and collected four rebounds with an assist and a steal, ending up with a solid 22 minutes of court time.
The only other McGill player to reach double-figures was point-guard
Jenning Leung with 14. Teammate
Francois Bourque, who merited second-team all-Canadian honours last season, was in early foul trouble and posted eight points with four rebounds before fouling out.
Kewyn Blain posted a "double-double" in a losing cause for UQAM, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Teammates
Greishe Clerjuste added a team-high 15 points and
Yassin Debache grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds before fouling out.
McGill pulled down an impressive 50 rebounds but the pesky UQAM squad bettered that with 55. Both sides were charged with 13 turnovers and McGill had an 8-5 advantage in steals.
The Redmen connected on 38 per cent of their attempts from the floor, making 27 of 71. They shot 6-for-23 from beyond the arc and dropped 14 of 20 from the line. UQAM shot 31.3, 44.4 and 57.1, respectfully.
The Citadins (1-2) close out their semester at Laval (1-1) on Nov. 27.
McGill is now 10-1 against CIS opponents, including a division-leading 3-0 record in the regular season. They will wrap up the fall semester by hosting third-place Laval on Saturday, Dec. 5 with a 5 p.m. start at Love Competition Hall. This is a make-up date for the Nov. 6 season opener that was rescheduled on the men's side.
