LENNOXVILLE, Que --
Jenning Leung collected a career-high 29 points and
Dele Ogundokun posted a "double-double" as No.3-ranked McGill officially opened their 115th season of men's basketball with a convincing 94-68 road victory over Bishop's, Saturday, at the Mitchell Gym.
Leung, a 20-year-old psychology junior, shot 9-for-20, hitting an impressive six of 10 three-point attempts. The 6-foot-1, 165-point guard who hails from The Philippines was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul-line and was credited with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
The Redmen, who had a colossal 44-29 advantage in rebounding, managed to reach the 20-point plateau in all four quarters. They led 20-16 after the opening stanza, then outscored Bishop's 26-19 in the second, 24-19 in the third and 24-14 in the final quarter.
"We wanted to come here and start our season off on the right track," admitted McGill bench boss
David DeAveiro, whose troops finished first last year but were felled by the Gaiters in the league championship game. "To play Bishop's in their gym after we lost here last year to end the season, I wouldn't lie to you there was a little bit of motivation behind it."
All five of the Redmen starters managed to reach double figures in scoring. Ogundokun, a shooting guard from Hamilton, Ont., amassed 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while
Vincent Dufort, the team captain from Smiths Falls, Ont., added 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Teammates
Francois Bourque and
Tychon Carter-Newman matched Dufort with 11 apiece.
The Gaiters had four starters of their own in double digits with
Peter Weston leading the way with 19 points.
Jonathan Bermillo and
Abdul Kamane each added 12 while big-man
David Belanger pitched in 10.
McGill shot 44.9 per cent from the field (35/78), went 10-for-26 from three-point range and sank 14 of 24 from the line (58.3). Bishop's shot 44.7 per cent from the floor (21/47) and 7-for-15 from beyond the arc. They went 19-for-28 from the line.
"A big stat tonight for us was offensive rebounds," added DeAveiro. " We had 24 compared to Bishop's eight and it gave us a ton of extra possessions. We had about 30 more possessions than them which is huge."
The Redmen had 21 more field-goal attempts than Bishop's and also held a 21-15 advantage in turnovers, which resulted in a 16-4 margin in points off miscues.
McGill, which now sits at 8-1 versus CIS opponents and 1-0 in RSEQ play, will prepare for a first-place showdown against undefeated Concordia (2-0) at Love Competition Hall on Nov.19 at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, winless Bishop's (0-2) will stay at home and battle Laval (0-1) on Nov. 21.
