OTTAWA -- The McGill University women's volleyball team stretched their win streak to four after sweeping McMaster and host Ottawa at the Gee-Gees Preseason Classic tournament in Montpetit Hall, Saturday.
The pool play involved a best-of-three schedule, while the playoff round reverted to the traditional best-of-five match. The Martlets surprised McMaster 26-24, 25-23 in the last round of pool play, then followed a few hours later with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-10 semifinal victory over Ottawa, advancing to Sunday's gold medal game. McGill had also reached the final of the Carabins tourney, a 3-0 loss to the Carabins on Sept. 20.
Fifth-year
veteran
Yasmeen Dawoodjee, a 5-foot-8 setter playing in front of her hometown friends and family, was McGill's most consistent player on the day. Against McMaster, the nutritional science senior collected 15 assists, seven digs and an assisted block. In the nightcap against the Gee-Gees, she registered 31 assists and a pair of digs.
"They stopped hitting to her area," said McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau, who singled out her veteran for praise. "It's all about the way she controlled and opened the game for our power-hitters to score."
Veterans
Catherine Amyot and
Marie-Eve Dorion led the Martlet offensive attack
Amyot, an engineering senior who also hails from the Ottawa area, had six kills, a half-dozen digs, two aces and a 2.0 passing ratio out of three aganst the Marauders, then put up nine more kills, nine digs and 2.0 passing in the semifinal against Ottawa.
For her part, Dorion, a physical education junior from St. Hubert, Que., posted six kills, six digs, one stuff block and a 2.1 passing ratio against McMaster, in addition to nine kills, eight digs, a pair of aces, and a 2.0 passing ratio against the Gee-Gees.
In Sunday's final, McGill will confront McMaster again. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. The Marauders finished atop the OUA West last season with a 15-4 regular season record but were upset by Toronto in the OUA championship game.
