OTTAWA -- The McGill University women's volleyball team got off to another good start for the second straight tournament, sweeping both Guelph and Saint Mary's by idential 2-0 scores, Friday, at the Gee-Gees Preseason Classic in Montpetit Hall.
As a result, the red-hot Martlets improved to 6-1 on the season.
The eight-team tourney features a best-of-three format, instead of the usual best-of-five. Other competing schools include Ottawa, McMaster, Sherbrooke,Windsor and Memorial.
In McGill's 25-19, 25-14 tourney-opening win over the Gryphons, senior
Catherine Amyot of Ottawa and junior
Marie-Eve Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., were the top scorers. Amyot registered seven kills, one ace, seven digs, one stuff block and a 2.50 passing ratio out of 3. Dorion added six kills, nine digs and an ace.
The Martlets followed that win a late afternoon 25-18, 25-22 conquest over the SMU Huskies.
Dorion paced the attack with eight kills, three aces, one block and a pair of digs. Amyot registered five kills, four aces, 11 digs and two blocks.
Also contributing was
Yasmeen Dawoodjee, a fifth-year setter from Ottawa, who racked up 17 assists in the first game, to go along with 19 assists, five digs, two kills and an ace in the second match.
McGill, which has already assured themselves of a spot in the tourney semifinals, will complete pool play on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they take on McMaster. They will then play an undetermined team in a semifinal Saturday at 7 pm. The tournament concludes with the medal round on Sunday.
