Box Score MONTREAL --
Marie-Alex Belanger, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Joliette, Que., scored a game-high 12 points as the No.4-ranked Montreal Carabins swooped around the mountain dividing the two downtown universities and swept the McGill Martlets 3-0 in women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The set scores were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-8.
The Carabins had a 33-23 edge in kills, a 5-1 advantage in aces and an 11-5 margin in stuff blocks. Both teams registered 36 digs.
"For some strange reason, it seems like we don't play as well on our home court compared to how we play on the road," said
Rachele Beliveau, who was coaching in her 998th game as bench boss at McGill. "We appear to be a bit too tight at home and have to learn how to be more relaxed."
Ashley Norfleet, a 5-foot-11 junior from Brossard, Que., led a somewhat impotent McGill attack with just seven points, on five kills, an ace and a pair of assisted blocks. She also tied
Marjolaine Ste-Marie of St. Lambert, Que., for the team lead in digs with eight, a number of them of the spectacular nature. Ste-Marie, a 5-foot-5 sophomore libero, led the team in passing as well with a 2.43 ratio out of 3.
Senior
Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., and freshman
Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., each tallied five points for the Martlets. Lapointe collected five kills and four digs, while Robitaille contributed four kills, a pair of assited blocks and one dig.
McGill, despite a solid 10-6 record, now finds themselves last in the tough four-team RSEQ conference. With four matches remaining to catch the third and final playoff berth, they sit one win behind Sherbrooke and Laval, both tied for second place with an identical record. Montreal leads the division with a 13-3 record.
McGill will have a chance to force a three-way tie if they can defeat Laval on Saturday (Jan. 31) in a 7 p.m. start at Love Competition Hall. (NOTE: SEE UPATED RSEQ STANDINGS BELOW)
