Marie-Sophie Nadeau scored a game-high 11 points and was one of three Carabins to reach double figures, as No.2-ranked Montreal swept McGill 3-0 in women's volleyball "Dig for the Cure" cancer fundraiser at Love Competition Hall, Thursday. The set scores were 25-15, 25-19, and 25-16.
The Carabins had a 40-24 edge in kills and a 12-4 margin in blocks. "Montreal played really well tonight," said Martlet head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "We couldn't afford to make any mistakes as they would capitalize on them right away." Montreal did so with an impressive 0.408 hitting percentage compared to McGill's 0.154.
There was a bright side to a tough loss for McGill, however, as the Martlets managed to raise about $860 for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., led all McGill scorers with 7.5 points, on six kills, one service ace, and one assisted block to go along with a team high 14 digs.
Ashley Norfleet, a junior from Brossard, Que., contributed 6.5 points for the Martlets, with six kills and one assisted block. She also collected 13 digs.
McGill, which has been impressive on defence early in the RSEQ season, had another stellar night racking up a 53-27 advantage in digs.The Martlets are now third in the RSEQ conference with a 9-4 record, only one win ahead of last-place Sherbrooke (8-4) for the final playoff spot going into the holiday break. The Vert & Or will go on the road to battle second-place Laval (10-2) on Nov. 29 to close out their first semester schedule. McGill is off for the December exam break and will resume play over the holidays in Toronto for the National Invitational Tournament, Dec. 28-30, where they play Acadia, McMaster and Toronto, respectively.
The Martlets will resume league play in the new year with a crucial match-up in Sherbrooke on Jan. 16.
