Close only counts in horseshoes as Martlet volleyballers fall short in Quebec City

Box Score
QUEBEC CITY -- Catherine Amyot posted a game -high 19 points but that was insufficient as the No-10 ranked McGill Martlets fell in five sets to the No.4-Laval Rouge et Or in a hard-fought women's volleyball match at Centre PEPS, Friday.

Amyot, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter from Ottawa, tied for a game-high with 17 kills. She added a pair of aces and a dozen digs.

McGill let a 2-1 lead slip away and Laval rallied to win 3-2 in a match that took two hours and 14 minutes to play. The set scores were 25-16, 26-28, 22-25, 25-23 and 15-11.

"So close... we had a slow start in the first and fifth sets and that was the difference," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "If there was a positive in a difficult loss like this, we showed much improvement over last week. We passed, served and hit so much better and showed a very good compete-level. It will be interesting to see how we do against Laval when we have a full lineup."

Laval, which improved to 7-1 atop the RSEQ standings,  had a 77-66 edge in kills, a 92-76 margin in digs and a lopsided 10-1 advantage in stuff blocks.

Teammates Ashley Norfleet and Marie-Christine Lapointe, were the only other McGill players to reach double figures in scoring. Norfleet collected 16 kills, one ace and contributed 13 digs, while Lapointe had 13 kills and 15 digs.

Co-captain Yasmeen Dawoodjee, who was unable to bend over with a back problem, was a real trooper and played the entire match for an injury-plagued Martlets squad, who are still missing starters Daphnee-Maude Andre-Morin (co-captain) and
Myriam Robitaille, both of whom suffered concussions in a practice session, of all places. Dawoodjee, a 5-foot-8 senior setter from Ottawa, somehow managed to contribute 45 assists, five kills, a pair of aces and 11 digs.

Five members of the Rouge et Or reached double digits, led by Alyssa Field-Boucher and Esther Gilbert with 18.5 points apiece and Alex Beraud with 18.

The Martlets (6-3) dropped to third-place, in a tight battle with Laval (7-1) and the Montreal Carabins (7-2). There is some relief in sight, however, as the second interlocking tournament of the season between the RSEQ and the AUS conferences is next on the agenda. At the tourney, slated for Nov. 21-13 in Quebec City, McGill will confront UNB (Nov. 21), followed by Memorial and Moncton (Nov, 22).
