Mariam Sylla collected a "double-double", sparking the McGill University women's basketball team to a 69-63 come-from-behind decision over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in preseason play at Ashbury College, Friday.
It was the second consecutive win for the defending Quebec conference champs but their first game in six weeks, since defeating the NCAA's Manhattan College 68-46 in their 93rd season-opener on Aug. 21.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 junior forward from Guinea who was the conference player of the year last season, had game highs with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate
Dianna Ros, a senior point-guard from Montreal, added 10 points with four rebounds and four assists while freshman
Marika Guerin of Sorel. Que., and
Gabriela Hebert, a senior from Chicoutimi, each contributed nine points.
McGill, which trailed 40-35 at halftime, had a 41-29 edge in rebounds.
Stephanie MacDonald, a 5-foot-10 senior from Ottawa, led the Gee-Gees with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Martlets shot 46 per cent from the field (26/56), 36.8 from three-point range (7/19) and an impressive 10-for-12 from the foul-line. Ottawa replied with 36.9, 39.1 and 50.0, respectively.
Ottawa finished third in the OUA East last year with a 14-8 record, while the Martlets finished atop the RSEQ conference with a 13-3 mark.
McGill (2-0) plays at Carleton on Saturday at 6 p.m., before returning home for the Redbird Classic Tournament, where they will play Lakehead, Regina and Toronto, Oct. 17-19.
