Volleyball Martlets stumble in battle of the mountain rematch

Box Score
MONTREAL- Marie-Sophie Nadeau scored a game-high 14 points as the No.3-ranked Montreal Carabins volleyball team swept McGill in straight sets on Friday night at the Centre CEPSUM. The Carabins, who won by set scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-18, regained top spot in the four-team RSEQ conference with a 13-3 record.

McGill which has only won five of the last 40 meetings overall against Montreal, were outmuscled by the Carabins who had a 36-26 advantage in kills, a 13-2 margin in service aces and a 11-5 edge in stuff blocks.

"I have to admit that Montreal played really well today," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "They forced us into making a lot of serve-receive errors, an area where we usually perform well."

Over the three sets, the Carabins forced McGill into making a whopping 13 ball-handling errors on serve-receive, compared to only three by Montreal.

Top scorers for McGill were Marie-Christine Lapointe and Ashley Norfleet who scored 12 and 9 points, respectively. Lapointe, a senior from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., had nine kills, two blocks and an ace, as well as a dozen digs on defence. Norfleet, a sophomore from Brossard, Que., collected eight kills, one block and a dig.

McGill senior Daphnee-Maude Andre-Morin, a libero from Kitchener, Ont., led the team in passing with a 2.28 ratio out of 3. She also registered 12 digs and made coutless saves on second contact balls.
Yasmeen Dawoodjee, a setter from Ottawa, Ont., dug 11 balls to go along with 24 assists and an ace.

The Carabins attack was also bolstered by Pamela Drapeau and Vicky Savard who both tallied 11.5 points. Alexane Joly pitched in 10 points to round out the top Montreal scorers.

McGill dropped to 9-7 on the season but remain nestled in the third and final playoff berth with 18 points, two ahead of Sherbrooke (8-8). With three contests remaining on the Martlets schedule, their magic number to clinch a spot in the post-season remains at two wins. .

The Martlets will host second-place Laval (12-4) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a match that will be streamed live on SSN. They will then close out the campaign with a home game versus the Carabins (Jan. 31) and a crucial road match-up in Sherbrooke (Feb. 2).
