"We didn't fight for the ball and that put us behind," said
Rachele Beliveau, who has a 469-426-2 record overall in 897 games as head coach of the Martlets. "We know that we are a good defensive team but we have to dig and didn't do enough of that today. It's a big part of our game."
The Vert & Or had a 52-46 edge in kills and a 10-6 margin in blocked shots. McGill held a 7-5 advantage in aces and a 69-54 difference in digs.
Marie-Christine Lapointe, a senior from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., and sophomore
Ashley Norfleet of Brossard, Que., led McGill offensively, with 16.5 and 16 points, respectively. Lapointe posted 13 kills, one ace, eight digs and 2.5 stuff blocks, while Norfleet collected 16 kills and 12 digs.
Daphnee-Maude Andre-Morin, a native of Vaudreuil who was raised in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, was McGill's top player on defence. She recorded a game-high 21 digs and led the team with a 2.53 passing ratio.
McGill now faces a tough match up in Quebec City against Laval (5-2) on Sunday. Next week, they will return to the scene of the crime in Sherbrooke but they won't have revenge on their minds as they will be confronting the AUS conference in the second interlocking tournament of the season.
