Martlets in action against the Carabins
Box Score
MONTREAL – Marie-Sophie Nadeau of St. Aime, Que., had a game-high 12 kills as the No.7-ranked Montreal Carabins swept McGill 3-0 in women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

The contest was closer than the final score portrayed but mistakes proved costly for the Martlets, who had an 18-12 lead in the opening set but committed seven service errors to end up losing 26-24. The Carabins, who had a 34-31 edge in kills, then cruised to 25-19 and 25-15 victories over the last two sets.

“We just missed too many serves tonight,” said Rachele Beliveau, in her 22nd season as head coach at McGill. “We handed them 11 points overall, including seven in the opening set. It kept them in the game and we kept giving them another chance.”

Virginie Hebert, a third-year veteran from St. Donat, Que., was McGill's top scorer with 10 points, eight of them on kills. The 5-foot-11 middle blocker added one ace, a stuff block and one dig. Teammate Ashley Norfleet, a freshman from Brossard, Que., added eight kills and three digs. Third-year power-hitter Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., contributed three kills, one ace, a game-high 14 digs and a 2.0 passing ratio.

The Martlets had a 44-36 edge in digs and passed very well with a 2.25 ratio out of three. Alexandra Kobza, a sophomore from North Vancouver, B.C., led the team in that department with 2.71 and registered nine digs.

The third-place Carabins, who improved to 13-6, will close out their regular season on Saturday afternoon when they host division-leading Sherbrooke (14-4)

The Martlets, who sit last in the RSEQ standings with a 9-10 record, will close out a disappointing campaign on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they play Laval (14-4), which also shares first place with Sherbrooke. It will be “Seniors Night” for the Martlets, who will be bidding farewell to graduating veterans Rebecca Canam of Yellowknife and Marcela Mansure of Rio de Janiero.
