Redmen Lacrosse vs. Queens (Away)

Won 13-10 at Queen's

KINGSTON - Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., scored once and added three helpers as visiting McGill rallied from an early 5-1 deficit to outlast Queen's 13-10 in men's university lacrosse, Sunday.

The Gaels led 5-2 after the opening quarter but McGill roared back with four straight goals and evened the count at 7-7 by halftime. The score was tied at 9-9 heading into the final stanza before the Redmen pulled away on the strength of two markers by Jishan Sharples of Vancouver, B.C., including the winner with just over 10 minutes remaining.

"It was good to get the long road trip out of the way early in the season and to come back with a pair of wins but I'm not happy with our effort as a team," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "I give full credit to Queen's as their defenders outplayed us 'til the end. We're not quite coming together the way we should and we have a lot of work to do."

Three other Redmen scored a pair, including Alex Rohrbach of Princeton Junction, N.J., Connor Goodwin of new Westminster, B.C., and Tayler Sipperly of Charlotte, N.C. Rounding out the tally was his brother Eric Sipperly, plus Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont., Anders Bjella of Milwaukee and Richie Klares of Warrenton, Virginia.

Simon Hudson, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior from Seattle, started for the Redmen and was beaten six times before being replaced by Riley McGillis of Peterborough, Ont., at 26:36. The veteran keeper only conceded four goals the rest of the way for the victory.

Matt Ericksen connected three times in a losing cause for the Gaels. Teammates Marc Santos and Ryan Wagner each scored twice, with singles going to Mitch Grant, Alex Wright and Brendan Zoehner.

The Redmen (2-0), who sit tied with Bishop's atop the 10-team CUFLA East standings, will host Concordia (0-0) on Thursday night at Forbes Field, located just behind Molson Stadium. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m.
