Soccer Redmen bounce Citadins in 111th season opener

MONTREAL – Midfielder Henri Ashe-Taylor, a freshman from the United Kingdom, scored the winner as No.5-ranked McGill blanked the Université du Québec à Montréal 1-0 in men's soccer before a crowd of 452 at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.

It officially marked the 111th season opener for the 118-year old McGill club, which began playing in 1894 but did not compete for four years during the First World War and missed another four years due to a University-wide funding crisis in the early 1970s.

The Redmen had a 15-8 advantage in shots toward net as French citizen Max Leblond, a first-year transfer from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, made three saves in the McGill net to collect his first official shutout in CIS play.

Ashe-Taylor, a management major out of Eton College in London, broke UQAM 'keeper Gabourd Fenelon's bid for a shutout with a rifle shot at the 40-minute mark. Fenelon, who got a piece of the ball but couldn't deflect it away from the net, ended up with five saves in a losing cause.

The Redmen, who improve to 1-0 in the RSEQ soccer conference, will travel to Quebec City to play Laval on Sunday at 1 p.m., while UQAM (0-1) will host Sherbrooke at the same time. Laval opens their season at Sherbrooke on Saturday.

REDMEN RAP: The game was webcast on SSN Canada with play-by-play duties handled by Katherine Green, a former all-star defender with the soccer Martlets … Colour commentary was provided by Ben Morse, a blueliner who helped the hockey Redmen win their first-ever CIS national championship last spring… The Redmen are coming off a second-place finish in the seven-team Quebec league last year with a 7-3-2 record behind division-leading Montreal (8-1-3). UQAM ended up fourth at 3-7-4.
