Martlets Volleyball vs Ottawa (Challenge Carabins; Away)

Won 3-1 vs Ottawa (18-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-18) EXHIBITION

CEPSUM (Univ.de Montreal)

MONTREAL - Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., was named to the all-tournament team as the McGill women's volleyball squad opened preseason play with a third-place finish at the Challenge Carabins de Québec-Ontario, a six-team competition held at the Centre CEPSUM over the weekend.

Lapointe, a kinesiology junior who stands six feet tall, registered 55 digs, 35 kills, seven aces, 6.5 stuff blocks and a 1.99 passing ratio (out of 3) in five matches overall.

The Martlets, who won three of five matches, opened the tourney on Friday by sweeping Toronto 25-19, 25-16 and 25-23 before losing in five sets to McMaster (25-20, 25-19, 14-25, 13-25, 9-15).

On Saturday, McGill knocked off the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21) in the morning match but were then swept by York 20-25, 15-25, 25-27 in the nightcap. In Sunday's bronze medal affair, the McGill women met and conquered Ottawa again, winning 18-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-18.

"I'm very happy with a third-place finish," said Rachèle Béliveau, in her 22nd season as head coach of the Martlets. "We have a lot of young players and didn't know what to expect. Our first match was a bit shaky but we won and showed steady improvement over the weekend."

Other top performances for McGill came from freshman power-hitter Catherine Amyot of Ottawa, rookie Ashley Norfleet of Brossard, Que., and veteran Marcela Mansure, a fifth-year setter who hails from Rio de Janeiro.

The one sour note from the weekend was a knee injury suffered on Saturday by highly-touted freshman Charlotte Clarke, a starting six-foot, middle blocker from Guelph, Ont. She is scheduled to undergo a medical exam early in the coming week to diagnose the extent of her injury.

The Martlets will head to Ottawa for the Gee-Gees Preseason Classic tournament, Sept. 28-29.  They are slated to meet Waterloo and Guelph in the opening round.
