Redmen Lacrosse at Brock (Exhibition; Away)

Tied 7-7 at Brock (EXHIBITION)

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Freshman Richie Klares of Warrenton, Virginia, scored three goals and added an assist as the visiting McGill Redmen rallied from a three-goal deficit and battled Brock to a 7-7 draw in a men's lacrosse exhibition game Sunday afternoon at Kiwanis Field. The host Badgers, perennial conference champs in the CUFLA West Division, declined to play overtime to decide a winner.

McGill led 2-1 after the opening quarter but Brock bounced back to lead 5-4 at the half and 7-4 heading into the final stanza. But the Redmen came on like gang-busters in the final period with goals from Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., rookie Taylor Sipperly of Charlotte, N.C., and Klares who tied the score at 7-7 with his third of the game and just 2:09 remaining.

The game featured an even wilder finish with both teams scoring an apparent go-ahead goal in the dying minutes but each marker was nullified by an illegal stick infraction. Greg Davidson of Toronto scored what would have been his fourth of the game for Brock with 2:41 remaining. McGill gead coach Tim Murdoch requested a stick inspection and the referee found the stick to be illegal. So the goal was wiped and Davidson was assessed a penalty.

During the ensuing power-play, Nolan Prinzen of Summit, N.J., gave McGill an apparent 8-7 lead. However, Brock turned the tables and also requested a stick measurement, which resulted in that goal being erased and McGill having to play shorthanded during the final minute.

"It was a very worthwhile trip," said Murdoch. "We wanted to play a tougher exhibition schedule this year and need to play more games like that against top quality teams like Brock, a team that we would likely meet at Nationals. We stacked up with them pretty well today."

Both goaltenders were outstanding in this contest as Brock senior Ian Duffy of Ajax, Ont., recorded 23 saves while McGill's Riley McGillis, a native of Peterborough, Ont., turned aside 20 of the 27 Brock shots he faced.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Prinzen and Connor Goodwin of New Westminster, B.C.

Other marksmen for the Badgers was Brandon Staal of Courtice, Ont., with two, plus Travis Gibbons of Owen Sound, Ont., and Mitch Robertson of Whitby, Ont.

McGill will resume their regular season schedule when they host Queen's on Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. The Badgers next action is on Sept. 23 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks.
