Won 23-4 vs Concordia

MONTREAL - Freshman Ben Follows of Toronto netted a hat-trick and senior Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., added a pair of goals to become the all-time leading scorer in school history as McGill crushed Concordia 23-4 at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.

Sixteen different players scored for the Redmen, who led 9-0 after the opening quarter, 12-0 at the half and 15-2 after three stanzas.

The Concordia squad is in its second year of operation and this was their first-ever official game as a member of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association.

"We respect the fact that Concordia is an expansion team and we tried hard not to run up the score," said Redmen head coach Tim Murdoch, who removed his starters at halftime. "But it seemed like whoever I called off the bench came on to score."

Besse, a two-time all-star and an economics senior who measures only 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, opened the scoring only 70 seconds into the game with the 109th of his career, which tied Luke LaCava's school record. He broke the mark with his next marker, early in the second quarter, which made the score 10-0.

"Besse's a great leader who has quick hands," said Murdoch, who moved him back to the attack position this season after playing him at midfield for most of the past two years. "It's quite an achievement to break LaCava's record at the start of his fourth year. Usually school records like that are broken late in a player's collegiate career."

Also tallying twice for the Redmen was Jishan Sharples of Vancouver, B.C., Antoine Champagne of Montreal, Richie Klares of Warrenton, Virginia, and Rhys Burnell of Abbotsford, B.C.

Alex Rohrbach of Princeton Junction, N.J., added one marker and also collected three assists. Other singles went to Nolan Prinzen, Anders Bjella, Ian Pearson, Eric Sipperly, Alex Lekacz, Drew Laird, Rufus Frost and Jake Gutman.

Ben Uveges of Phelps, N.Y., was credited with five assists.

James Gillis tallied a hat-trick in a losing cause for the Stingers, who also got a goal from Dylan Jones.

Sophomore goaltender Riley McGillis of Peterborough, Ont., started between the pipes and registered the win for McGill but was pulled after the first quarter with a 9-0 shutout in progress. He was replaced by Simon Hudson, a senior from Seattle who conceded four goals in the remaining 60 minutes. Louis Grimes was saddled with all 23 goals in net for Concordia.

McGill, which leads the six-team CUFLA East Division with a 3-0 record, will now make a seven-hour trek out to St. Catharines, Ont., for an exhibition game against Brock, perennial contenders in the CUFLA West.

Concordia (0-1) heads to Peterborough this weekend for a pair of league games against Trent (0-2).
