MONTREAL – There was good news and bad news for the McGill women's volleyball team as they hosted the second RSEQ-AUS interlocking volleyball tournament over the weekend, an eight-team, three-day event that featured 16 regular season games between the Quebec and Atlantic conferences.
First the good news: McGill defeated three of their four opponents, which by most leagues, is an impressive feat.
Now the bad news, their lone loss, a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 sweep by Moncton on Sunday afternoon, meant the Martlets fell further behind their three other Quebec league rivals as each of them went 4-0 over the weekend.
“Moncton is a tough team because they play a very consistent, patient game and rarely make mistakes,” said Rachele Beliveau, in her 22nd year as head coach at McGill. “We had a five or six-point lead in the second set and let it slide away and if you open the door against that team, they capitalize and are tough to beat. If we had won that second set, I think that the momentum would have been in our favour and we would have had a different outcome.”
Genevieve Plante, a third-year power-hitter from Montreal, paced the Martlets in the loss to Moncton with a game-high 16 kills, to go along with a pair of aces, seven digs and a 1.85 passing ratio (out of 3).Catherine Amyot, a freshman from Ottawa added nine kills, nine digs and one stuff block. Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., contributed eight kills, a team-high 12 digs, three assisted blocks and a 2.0 passing ratio.
McGill, which conquered Memorial on Friday, then UNB and Cape Breton on Saturday, currently sits last in the four-team RSEQ conference with a 7-7 record. They are three wins shy of the third-place Montreal Carabins (10-4) who are holding down the final playoff berth.
Six of their seven wins have come at the expense of Atlantic-based teams, so with only six contests remaining in the season – all against Quebec teams that are ranked in the CIS Top 10 – the young Martlets face a steep, uphill battle in their hopes to qualify for post-season play.
The Martlets will now get a six-week break to lick their wounds and focus on the December exam break. They will resume league play on Jan. 11 when they host Sherbrooke, which sit second in the RSEQ standings with an 11-3 record.
