MONTREAL -The McGill women's volleyball squad continued their winning ways on Saturday with a pair of victories over UNB and Cape Breton in the AUS-RSEQ Interlocking league tournament at the Currie gym, Saturday.
McGill swept the UNB V-Reds in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-16), then came away with a 3-1 decision over the Capers (25-21, 25-20, 25-27 and 25-19).
"Overall we played very well," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "We stumbled a little in the third set after I made a number of substitutions and lost the set (27-25) but came back strong to close it out in the final set. Our passing was much better and that helped us a lot. We are finally starting to come together as a team."
Leading the Martlets to victory over UNB was Virginie Hebert, a junior from St. Donat, Que., with eight kills, three aces and three blocks and five digs. Junior Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., added seven kills, an ace, one stuff block and seven digs. Catherine Amyot, a freshman from Ottawa, contributed seven kills and three digs. Brazilian import Marcela Mansure registered a game-high 28-assists. Sophomore Alexandra Kobza of Vancouver, B.C., was credited with 14 digs and MontrealerGenevieve Plante had a dozen.
In the win over Cape Breton, Amyot had 15 kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces, while Plante added 14 kills, an ace, one block, eight digs and a 2.39 passing ratio. Ashley Norfleet of Brossard, Que., produced 10 kills, an ace and three blocks and Lapointe contributed nine kills, one ace, three blocks, a game-high 19 digs and a 2.39 passing ratio. Mansure had 46 assists, 14 digs, five kills, one ace and a block.
The fourth-place Martlets improved their regular season record to 6-6 in the challenging RSEQ conference, including a 6-1 mark in interlocking play against the Atlantic conference. The three-day tourney wraps up on Sunday and the Martlets will take on Moncton (4-3) at 1 p.m.
