MONTREAL - Pink Power was in full effect Friday night but the No.5-ranked Laval ladies gave the McGill women's volleyball team the blues with a 3-1 decision before a vocal crowd of 327 at Love Competition Hall in the annual Dig for the Cure Night in support of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. The set scores were 25-19, 22-25, 25-13 and 25-19.

There was a bright side to a tough loss for McGill, however, as the Martlets managed to raise about $1,900 in donations. Both teams wore the appropriate colour, with the Martlets decked out in pink uniforms and the black-clad Laval ladies wearing shocking pink socks.

McGill had a 20-13 edge in kills but Laval had a 13-8 advantage in aces and also won the dig battle, with a slim 60-59 margin.

Esther Gilbert, a 5-foot-11 junior from St. Come de Liniere, Que., paced the Rouge et Or with a game-high 19.5 points, including 12 kills, five aces and 2.5 blocks.

Genevieve Plante, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter from Montreal, led the Martlets with 14 points, collecting 13 kills and an ace. The kinesiology junior also registered 11 digs and a team-high 2.08 passing ratio (out of 3).

Teammate Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., added seven kills, a pair of aces, 1.5 blocks and 10 digs. Virginie Hebert of St. Donat, Que., added seven kills, an ace and four digs. Marcella Mansure, the fifth-year setter from Brazil, tied a game-high with 36 assists, to go along with a pair of kills, an ace and four digs.

Laval, which improved to 8-1 atop the RSEQ conference standings, returns home to host second-place Sherbrooke (6-3) on Saturday, while the fourth-place Martlets (4-5) head across the slopes of Mt. Royal on Sunday for a key encounter with the Montreal Carabins (5-4) in a 1 p.m. start.
