Martlets Volleyball at Laval (Away)
Lost 2-3 at Laval (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 10-15)
QUEBEC CITY – Kaiva Mateus racked up a game-high 14 kills, to go along with an ace and two stuff blocks but it was not enough as the visiting McGill women's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss at Laval, Friday. The set scores for the Rouge et Or were 15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 and 15-10 in a two-hour, 12-minute marathon played at the Centre PEPS.
Mateus, a 6-foot-1 senior middle-blocker from Montreal West, moved into a tie for second-place among the Quebec league kill leaders with an average of 2.47 per game and is sixth in hitting percentage at .252.
"It was a tough loss but I saw a lot of positives and it was one of the best games that we've played all season," said Rachèle Béliveau, head coach of the Martlets. "We were aggressive, played as a team and showed good consistency."
Marie-Christine Lapointe, a sophomore setter from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., contributed 17 digs, nine kills, three aces and four blocks, while teammates Geneviève Plante (9 kills, 12 digs) of Montreal and Kristina Pavlovic (11 digs, 8 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks, 2.41 passing) of Richmond, B.C., also posted good numbers for McGill.
Daphnée-Maude André-Morin of Kitchener, Ont., had a strong performance defensively with 19 digs and a 2.07 passing ratio out of three. She leads the RSEQ conference with an average of 4.16 digs per set.
Marcela Mansure, a senior setter from Brazil, was credited with 40 assists and a dozen digs. She ranks second among league leaders with 9.03 assists per set.
For Laval, Eva Thibault, Catherine Laurin and Esther Gilbert led the way with 11 kills apiece.
The Rouge et Or remain tied with Montreal atop the Quebec conference standings with identical 7-3 records. McGill is deadlocked with Sherbrooke for third place at 3-7.
The Martlets resume league play at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a contest that will be webcast on SSN, from love Competition Hall.
