WOLFVILLE, N.S. -- Acadia took advantage of six McGill
turnovers, three of them directly resulting in touchdowns and
waltzed to a 38-9 victory over the visiting McGill Redmen in CIS
football at Raymond Field, Saturday.
Acadia generated 328 yards of net offence, compared to 292 by
McGill, which coughed up the ball three times on interceptions,
twice on downs and once on a fumble.
Running back Zach Clarke's scored a pair of TDs
in the final quarter, including one a 25-yard fumble return as the
result of a blocked punt. A five-yard TD run by Clarke gave Acadia
a 21-7 lead at 3:12 of the fourth stanza and 31 seconds later, the
Axemen put the game out of reach when Tom Labenski
returned an interception 37 yards to make it 28-7.
Taylor Renaud caught five passes for 125 yards
and one touchdown on a 58-yard toss from quarterback Kyle
Graves to put the Axemen ahead 14-0 with 61 seconds
remaining before halftime. Graves completed just nine of 20 passes
for 168 yards on the day.
Acadia had opened the scoring as a result of a turnover, at 4:14
of the opening quarter. Mike Rostance returned a
punt 56 yards deep into McGill territory, which set up an 11-yard
TD run by Brett Haenni. However, the senior
running back, who rushed for 74 yards on only 11 carries, left the
game at the mid-point of the second quarter with a suspected broken
hand.
McGill narrowed the gap to 14-7 midway through the third stanza,
when quarterback Ryne Bondy scored their lone TD
on a three-yard plunge. Bondy came off the bench in the second
quarter in relief of freshman Dallon Kuprowski,
who left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Kuprowski was
4-for-8 for 32 yards and one interception, while Bondy completed 24
of 42 pass attempts for 256 yards and two picks.
McGill wilted in the final stanza as Acadia outscored the Redmen
24-2, with the two points coming off a safety touch. After three
contests, the Redmen have been outscored a combined total of 41-2
in the final quarter.
Rookie kicker Ryan Begin added a 35-yard
field-goal at the 12-minute mark of the final frame, which made the
score 31-9.
The only bright spots for McGill on an otherwise dreary day,
were receivers Mathieu Guerette and
Jean-Philippe Paquette. Guerette hauled in 10
receptions for 104 yards, while Paquette amassed 171 all-purpose
yards, including 93 on five kickoff returns, 42 on six punt returns
and 36 on five receptions.
Acadia, which improved to 2-0, will host the winless St.FX X-Men
next Saturday, while McGill heads home with an 0-3 record and will
take on the No.1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City next
Sunday.
REDMEN RAP: Joffrey Gorin and
Charles-Evens Peltrop led the Redmen defence with
6.5 and 5.5 tackles, respectively. Teammate Simon Lamontagne had
the only McGill interception... McGill head coach Sonny
Wolfe was honoured by fans and Acadia's director of
athletics, Kevin Dickie, in a pregame ceremony.
Wolfe earned his stripes as a head coach for nearly 20 years at
Acadia before taking over at McGill in 2007.
