Martlets Volleyball vs Sherbrooke (RSEQ reg. season tourney at Rimouski; Away)

RIMOUSKI, Que. - Kaiva Mateus, a senior from Montreal West, scored a game-high 18 points as McGill snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 triumph over Sherbrooke in a Quebec conference women's volleyball tournament at Rimouski, Sunday.
The set scores were 29-27, 25-16 and 28-26 in a match that lasted an hour and 29 minutes.
"It was a huge relief to win that and a big boost for our confidence," said McGill head coach Rachèle Béliveau, whose Martlets opened the tourney with a 3-1 loss to the archrival Montreal Carabins (12-25, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25) on Friday, followed by a demoralizing 3-0 setback to Laval on Saturday (19-25, 21-25, 22-25).
The tourney replaced the interlocking games that had been scheduled and cancelled with the Atlantic conference. Each match counted in the RSEQ conference standings and the victory helped McGill maintain a hold of third place with a 3-6 record, two points ahead of cellar-dwelling Sherbrooke (2-7). Montreal (7-2) leads the league, followed by Laval (6-3).
Mateus, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, racked up 16 kills, to go with one ace, a stuff block and added half a dozen digs on defence to pace the Martlets.
"We scored a lot of points today on our transition game between our setter (Marcela Mansure) and Kaiva, who has had to adjust to the opposition keying on her," said Béliveau. "Kaiva wasn't used to being stopped, had to work on her technique in practice and has now found ways to get around that."
McGill had a 67-52 edge in digs and a 10-4 advantage in aces. Mansure, a senior from Brazil, ended up with 33 assists, eight digs one kill and an ace.
Another key performer was sophomore Geneviève Plante, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter from Montreal, who led the team with a stellar 2.71 passing ratio (out of 3), to go along with a game-high 20 digs, plus nine kills and a pair of aces.
Other leading Martlets that figured in the scoring included Emily Kyte (8 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) of Ottawa and Kristina Pavlovic (6 kills, 1 ace, 10 digs) of Richmond, B.C.
The victory ended the first semester on a positive note for the Martlets, who now get a month off to heal up some bumps and bruises during the December exam break. They will return to action at a post-Christmas tournament in Brandon, Man., Dec. 29-31, then play post-New Year's exhibitions against the Winnipeg Lady Wesmen (Jan. 4) and Ottawa Gee-Gees (Jan. 7).
