Martlets Volleyball vs Laval (Away)
Won 3-1 at Laval (25-22, 15-25, 25-17, 25-22)
QUEBEC CITY - Jacqueline Ng, a senior from Vancouver, B.C., scored a game-high 16 points as the McGill women's volleyball teams came up with a huge 3-1 road victory at Laval, Saturday. The set scores were 25-22, 15-25, 25-17 and 25-22 in a somewhat lengthy match that took exactly two hours to play.
It marked only the 11th regular-season victory ever against Laval for the Martlets, who also won their opener at Laval last year and have seven of those lifetime wins at home. It was also a much-needed win in the wake of a demoralizing 3-0 loss to the Montreal Carabins in the McGill home opener, Friday.
Ng, a six-foot, power-hitter, registered eight kills, a pair of aces and five stuff blocks.
"Jacqui played very well and came up with big plays at key moments," said Rachele Béliveau, in her 21st season as head coach of the Martlets. "We needed that win and our goal was to not worry about the score but to have a change in attitude and have some fun out there on the court. We match up well with Laval as they play a style similar to ours."
Teammates Kaiva Mateus of Montreal and Kristina Pavlovic of Richmond, B.C., each contributed 11 points to the victory. Mateus racked up 10 kills and two stuff blocks, while Pavlovic was credited with seven kills, an ace, four blocks and eight digs.
Emily Kyte, a third-year power-hitter from Ottawa, added seven kills, one ace, two blocks and 10 digs.
On the defensive side of the ledger, Andrée-Maude Daphnée-Morin of Kitchener, Ont., led the Martlets with 18 digs and Marcela Mansure, a native of Brazil, has a game-high 29 assists to go along with 10 digs.
McGill (1-1) will host Laval in the all-important rematch at the Currie Gym on Friday (Nov. 4). Last year, the Martlets dropped all three games after winning the first meeting with the Rouge et Or.
