MONTREAL -- McGill captain Ryan Besse (Aurora, ON) exploded for three goals plus three assists, while the Redmen sharp-shooting attackman Alex Rohrbach (Princeton Junction, NJ) scored four goals and added a helper to lead the #1 ranked McGill lacrosse team to a 15-2 demolition of Queen's in men's lacrosse on Forbes Field. The Redmen improve to 8-1 with a secure hold on 1st place in CUFLA-East at 8-1, while a winless Queen's squad drops to 0-9. The freshman Rohrbach is now tied as the league's high scorer in first place in CUFLA-East with 32 points (http://cufla.ca/league_leaders.php?schedule_id=96529&league_id=942&type=pts ).
A storyline in today's contest was McGill freshman Jordan Sanford (Biddeford, ME), who totally dominated face-offs, winning 16 out of 19 draws, while the Redmen rested McGill's league-leading face-off man J.J. Miller. A deep Redmen defense, anchored by veteran Kyle Robinson (New Westminster, BC), Jeff O'Neill (Toronto, ON) and Frank Mendyk IV (Commack, NY) shut down the impotent Gaels' attack while freshman goalie Riley McGillis (Peterborough, ON) held Queen's to just two goals. McGillis, supported by a stingy Redmen defense, now enjoys the lowest goals-against average in Canada at 5.92 GAA (http://cufla.ca/league_leaders.php?schedule_id=96529&league_id=942&type=gaa ). McGill also was able rested its other talented goalie, Ward Waesche, who rates 3rd in CUFLA-East with a low 8.26 GAA against stiff competition.
A disciplined Redmen team took just two penalties, while Queen's had one dozen penalties in the contest.
"To maintain our #1 spot in Eastern Canada ahead of Bishop's, our challenge was to limit Queen's to under five goals, so the defense really delivered by allowing just two," stated Coach Murdoch. "We had exceptional discipline with just two penalties, plus excellent performances from freshman Jordan Sanford who owned face-offs", added Murdoch. Murdoch also noted that "Ossie Long (Sarnia, ON), Jack Stewart (South Salem, NY), Dave Hogarth (Toronto, ON) and Jon Rathauser (Bell Meade, NJ) led defensive midfield units that confounded Queen's offense and stifled scoring opportunities for four quarters."
McGill's scoring was led be Besse (3G, 3A), who now needs three more markers to reach the 100-goal plateau.
Rohrbach (4G, 1A), and Prinzen (3G). Also scoring for the red side were Ross Burst (St. Louis, MO) who potted two goals and added an assist, freshman Leland de Langley (Orangeville, ON) who scored twice, as well as a goal by McGill captain, Jishan Sharples (Vancouver., BC).
Queen's two goals were scored by Alex Vincent (Toronto, ON), while the Gaels' goal-tending duties were split by Alex Guiney (Toronto, ON, 7GA) and Chris Porter (Aurora, ON, 8GA).
With the lopsided win McGill improves to 8-1 and sits atop CUFLA-East, while Queen's struggles continue as the team falls to 0-9 and remains in sixth place at the bottom of CUFLA-East. McGill travels to Kingston, Ontario on Saturday, October 22nd in a rematch against Queen's as both teams wrap up the CUFLA regular season at week's end. The Redmen lacrosse team will finish either in 1st or 2nd place in CUFLA East, depending on the outcome of the rematch against Queen's as well as comparable scores in a possible tie-breaker with 2nd place Bishop's.
