Martlet Volleyball at Sherbrooke (Away)
Won 3-1 at Sherbrooke (20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21)
SHERBROOKE - Rookie power-hitter Genevieve Plante of Montreal registered 15 kills and 18 digs as visiting McGill rallied to defeat Sherbrooke 3-1, Saturday. After dropping the opening set 20-25, the Martlets roared back to sweep the next three 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21.
It was just what the doctor order after McGill endured yet another 3-1 heart-breaking loss to the Montreal Carabins at Love Competition Hall, the previous night.
Plante, a 5-foot-10 freshman, also led the team on defence with a 2.12 passing ratio out of 3.0, and was singled out by McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau as the key to victory.
"She covered half the court today," said Beliveau, who has a 439-397-2 overall record in 20 seasons at McGill. "She is so good that nobody aims to hit the ball in her direction. They tend to prefer hitting to the other side of the court, which makes it easier for the rest of our defence to set up. When the opponent hits to a smaller zone, it makes it more difficult for them to find a hole in our defensive alignment."
Emily Kyte, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Ottawa, also had 15 kills to go along with one ace, 11 digs and a pair of stuff blocks.
The two teams combined for an impressive total of 94 kills, including 51 by the Martlets. McGill, which leads the Quebec conference in digs with an average of 14.9 per set, racked up 88 digs against the Vert & Or. Five Martlets reached double figures, including Daphnée-Maude Andree-Morin (20 digs) of Kitchener, Ont., Victoria Pelletier (13) of Westmount, Que., and Kelsey Irwin (12) of Vancouver, B.C.
The third-place Martlets improved to 10-8 with two matches remaining before playoffs - at Montreal on Feb. 4 and at home to Laval, Feb. 5. The match-up against the Carabins will be a preview of the QUVL best-of-three semifinal series, slated to begin on the road, Feb. 11.
Sherbrooke, which is buried in the basement of the four-team Quebec league with a 5-13 record, will miss post-season play.
