Road-weary Ravens outlast Redmen in rain

MONTREAL - Noah Miller of Burlington, Vt., registered a hat-trick but his performance was trumped by a five-goal effort from Rajinder Wasson as the visiting Carleton Ravens surprised McGill with a 10-8 victory in men's lacrosse on a rain-soaked Forbes Field, Thursday.

The result left Carleton alone atop the CUFLA East Division standings with a 6-1 record, while second-place McGill dropped to 4-2 in league play. The Redmen shot themselves in the foot, drawing 11 penalties for eight minutes, while Carleton was only penalized only twice for two minutes.

Wasson, a graduate student and former All-Canadian playing in his eighth season as a Ravens lacrosse player, was supported by teammate Brett Lewandowski, who tallied six points, including three goals.

The Redmen offence included a pair of goals from Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., along with singles from Mike Ting of Boston, Mass., Jishan Sharples of Vancouver, B.C., and Nolan Prinzen of Summit, N.J.

In a see-saw battle, Carleton grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but the Redmen rallied to jump ahead 3-2 after the opening quarter. The teams were tied at 4-4 by halftime but Carleton led 8-6 after three quarters. The teams traded two goals apiece in the final stanza.

"We were outplayed tonight by a scrappy Carleton team that had not beaten us since 2005," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "While we played poorly throughout much of the game, our tight-knit defensive unit, led by Sepp Stephens, Jeff O'Neill and goaltender Guy Fox, played well and limited Carleton's high-scoring duo of attack men of Corey Fowler and Tim Bergen to just two goals."

McGill travels to Kingston for a game against Queen's on Oct. 3 where a win would solidify a three-way battle in the East with Carleton and Bishop's (4-1).
