MONTREAL - Kelsey Irwin, a senior power-hitter
from Vancouver, B.C., racked up 23 kills, 10 digs, an ace and one
stuff block but it was insufficient as McGill fell 3-2 to the
No.5-ranked Montreal Carabins in women's volleyball at Love
Competition Hall, Sunday.
Marie-Sophie Nadeau, a freshman power-hitter
with the Carabins replied with 24 kills and two blocks as Montreal
improved to 12-2, winning 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 24-26 and 15-12 in a
two-hour, 20-minute marathon.
It was the final match of the semester for both squads and
wrapped up a tough weekend for McGill, which also suffered a 3-1
setback to No.3-ranked Laval on Friday.
"In general, we played well but we were a little too
conservative," said Rachele Béliveau, in her 20th
season as McGill head coach. "We seem to reach a plateau when we
get to 10 on the scoreboard and again at 20. We have to learn how
to raise our intensity and take more risks."
The cross-town rivals were evenly matched and the stats bore
that out. McGill had a 59-55 edge in kills and the Carabins held a
slim 78-77 margin in digs. The teams were even in aces (seven
apiece), blocks (five aside).
Among the other top performers for the Martlets was Montreal
native Genevieve Plante, a 5-foot-10 freshman who
had 11 kills and four blocks. Also, Victoria Pelletier, a sophomore from Westmount, Que., added seven
kills, an ace, 12 digs and led the team in passing with a lofty
2.60 ratio out of 3.
The Martlets who fell to 16-13 overall and 8-6 in regular season
play, now get a four-week break to recuperate and write some exams.
They return to action in late December, when they venture into
Ontario to participate at the Varsity Blues Holiday tournament in
Toronto, Dec. 28-30.
"We're definitely a little tired and could use the break," said
Béliveau. "We suffered a lot of injuries early on and many of our
matches have gone the full five-set limit (nine to be precise), so
there was not much juice left. We will have to do some better
planning of our schedule next year and perhaps look at moving one
of the interlocking tournaments into the second semester."
