MONTREAL - Kelsey Irwin, a six-foot
middle-blocker from Vancouver, B.C., hammered a game-high 22 kills
and added a pair of stuff blocks as McGill defeated Sherbrooke 3-1
in a women's volleyball match at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
The Martlets won by set scores of 25-22, 33-35, 27-25 and 25-15
in a marathon-like time of two hours, 16 minutes.
The second set (33-35), which thoroughly entertained the fans
but drained both teams, lasted 44 minutes and was the highest set
score ever in school history and somewhat reminiscent of last
summer's infamous Wimbledon tennis match between John
Isner and Nicolas Mahut.
"That set was tough on both teams,' said Rachele
Béliveau, head coach of the Martlets. "We fought hard and
it affected the energy level and concentration but we battled back
to win the third set 27-25 and it gave us the momentum we
needed."
McGill had a 53-49 edge in kills, but were outscored in aces
(6-1), blocks (14-5) and digs (68-54).
Other leading Martlets included senior Alexandra
Sheppard (9 kill, 2 blocks) of North Vancouver, as well as
sophomore Emily Kyte (8 kills, 1 block) of Ottawa
and Kaiva Mateus (6 kills, 3 blocks), a junior
from Montreal. Marcela Mansure of Lachine, Que.,
registered 42 assists and Daphnée-Maude
Andre-Morin of Kitchener, Ont., had 21 digs and a stellar
2.48 passing ratio.
Sherbrooke's Renée-Claude Chevarie, a senior
from Lac-au-Saumon, Que., led the Vert & Or with a dozen kills,
three aces and one stuff block.
McGill sits third in the Quebec league with a 5-3 record, two
points behind second-place Laval (6-2) and a comfortable six-point
bulge ahead of cellar-dwelling Sherbrooke (2-6).
Up next for both teams is the second Quebec-Atlantic
interlocking tournament of the season, which counts in the
standings of both leagues. The four Quebec teams will hook up with
four AUS-based schools in a three-day affair at Sherbrooke, Nov.
19-21. McGill, which has been victorious in five of their last six
matches, will play Saint Mary's (4-2), Memorial (1-5), Moncton
(4-1) and UNB (5-1).
