GUELPH, Ont. --The York Lions defeated McGill 2-1 in a key women's field hockey match-up, Sunday.
"It was a very dssappointing result as a victory would have put us in third place, ahead of York; Iinstead we have fallen to fifth," said Jean-Pierre Turpain, co-head coach of the Martlets.
The Martlets appeared to start with a lack of intensity and York midfieldder Effie Petrou scored in the 18th minute. York pressed McGill's defence with four short-corners that were well-defended.
McGill started the second half on a stronger note with good distribution from the centre-line and the Martlets tied the game when Camille St-Cyr scored on a short corner.
The game changed tempo and play went back and forth with York producing finally scoring in the 52nd minute after four consecutive short corners.
"We modified our lineup in the second half, reinforcing the midfield but were unable to score, even with two short corners in the last minute of play," said Turpain. "Looks like we have to go back to the drawing board."
McGill dropped 3-5 in league play and will head to Kingston next weekend for games against Toronto and Queen's on Oct. 9.
