TORONTO - Three players netted hat-tricks and Alex
Kruse of Oakville, Ont., scored a goal and added five
helpers as visiting McGill trampled Toronto 17-3 in men's varsity
lacrosse action, Sunday.
The result, combined with Saturday's 13-10 overtime loss at
Trent University in Peterborough, Ont., left the Redmen with a 2-1
record and a three-way share of second place with Trent and
Carleton in the CUFLA East. Bishop's leads the division with a 3-1
record after upsetting Trent 9-6 on Sunday.
Against Toronto, the Redmen established a school record with 12
consecutive goals before the Varsity Blues could reply. McGill led
6-0 after the opening quarter, 11-0 at halftime and 14-1 after
three quarters. It was a rough affair that featured 17 penalties,
including 10 to McGill.
Luke LaCava of Weston, Conn., Mike
Ting of Sudbury, Mass., and Montrealer Jason
Martin scored three times apiece for the winning side.
Teammate Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., added a pair
with singles going to Sean Simeson of Oshawa,
Alex Kost of Pelham, N.Y., and Matt
Jankowski of Brewster, N.Y., plus Jishan Sharples and Jake Safarik, both natives of Vancouver,
B.C.
Freshman Simon Hudson, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound
goalkeeper from Seattle, Wash., started in goal for the Redmen and
allowed only three goals to earn his first victory in CUFLA action.
He was assessed a minor penalty, however, and had to be replaced
for one minute by veteran Guy Fox of Glen Rock,
N.J.
The Redmen now have a return engagement against the winless
Varsity Blues (0-2) on Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. on Forbes Field, just
north of Molson Stadium. That contest will be followed by the
team's annual alumni Homecoming game at 4:30 p.m.
