MONTREAL – Four players tallied hat-tricks, including team
captain Nick Moreau of Trumbull, Conn., who scored
four goals and added four assists as a resurgent McGill men's
lacrosse squad de-feathered the visiting Carleton Ravens with a
convincing 18-8 victory on Forbes Field, Sunday.
McGill jumped out to a 6-2 lead after one quarter, but allowed
Carleton to hang on 8-6 at halftime. The second half
was all Redmen as they outscored Carleton 10-2 in the final two
stanzas for a doble-digit margin of victory.
The other hat-tricks were accomplished by Greg Henry (3-2-5) of Halton Hills, Ont., Alex
Kruse (3-1-4) of Oakville, Ont., and Mike
Ting of Sudbury, Mass.
Luke LaCava of Weston, Conn., added two markers
and a helper. Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Jake
Safarik (1-3-4) of Vancouver, B.C., Sean
Simeson (1-1-2) of Oshawa, Ont., and Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont.
"Aside form all the offensive exploits, we benefited from more
dominant face-off play of senior Jake Winn, as
well as a solid defence, anchored by Brendan
Farrer and Kyle Robinson, plus a
respectable showing from rookie goalie Simon Hudson," said head coach Tim Murdoch,
wose troops have produced a league-leading 99 goals in seven games
for an impressive 14.1 goals-per-game average. The Redmen own the
fifth-best defensive record in the league, allowing 50 goals for a
7.14 GAA.
Leading the offensive charge for the Ravens was Raj
Wasson with four goals, as well as Tom
Bergin and Tom Acton who registered two
goals apiece. Acton was slapped with a costly three-minute
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the final quarter for charging a
McGill player in the change box, which led to a pair of power play
goals.
The Redmen improved to 5-2 and now sit tied with Bishop's (5-1)
and Trent (5-1) atop the CUFLA Eastern Conference. McGill has a
re-match against Carleton on Oct. 7 in Ottawa before heading south
of the border for non-conference games against Plattsburgh State
(NCAA Div-III) on Oct. 15 in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Holy Cross
(NCAA Div-I) on Oct. 17 in Worcester, Mass.
