MONTREAL - A second-period goal by rearguard Stacie Tardif held up as the No.1-ranked McGill Martlets held on
for a 1-0 victory over Carleton in women's university hockey at
McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The result extended McGill's win streak over CIS opponents to 58
consecutive games nine shy of the CIS record held by Alberta. The
Martlets have now won 33 straight games over the Ravens and are
45-0-1 lifetime against them.
Tardif, a science sophomore from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que.,
floated a long shot in the top left corner past a screened
Amanda Muhlig of Sarnia, Ont., for the game-winner
at 7:18 of the middle period. Muhlig kicked aside 27 of 28 shots in
a losing effort.
Gabrielle Smith, her counterpart at the other
end of the ice, was credited with 23 saves while registering her
second shutout in three league games and her third career
whitewash.
The third-place Ravens (2-2-0) play at Concordia (1-3-1) on
Saturday before heading home to the nation's capital. McGill
(4-0-0) will have a week of prep time before hosting the upstart
Montreal Carabins (4-1) at McConnell Arena on Nov. 7. The Carabins
feature two former mcgill players in their lineup - sniper
Marie-Andree Leclerc Auger, who was the CIS rookie of the year last
season, and Catherine Herron, who graduated from McGill in
2008.
