Ian Baillie

Ian Baillie was appointed head coach in 2013 and has guided McGill to a 76-29-3 coaching record in 108 games overall, including a 56-15-3 mark in regular season play and a 14-10 dossier in the post-season. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Baillie spent his formative years in Cambridge, Ont., where he played rugby and graduated from Galt Collegiate & Vocational Institute. He went on to play five seasons of varsity rugby for the University of Guelph, where he earned a bachelor of arts (BA '91) in management economics.

Baillie has earned three RSEQ men's rugby coach-of-the-year honours (2015, 2021, 2024). He has guided McGill to a berth at the conference championship game in seven of his 11 seasons, winning gold in 2013, 2015 and 2022. He has also led the squad to a pair of berths at the national championship tournament, where the team finished 1-2 in 2019 and posted a 2-1 silver-medal finish in 2019.

Some of the top highlight seasons include: In 2015, his troops posted a 6-0-1 first-place finish in regular season play in addition to post season victories over ETS (50-0) and Montreal (10-9) to capture the RSEQ championship. In 2021, his squad produced a 5-1-0 first-place finish in regular season play, followed by a 20-27 double overtime win against Bishop's and a 33-0 loss to Concordia in the RSEQ championship game. In 2022, he led the team to a 6-1-0 first-place finish in regular season play, followed by a semifinal playoff victory over Bishop's (20-18) and a league championship conquest over Ottawa (31-24). At the Nationals in Vancouver, the team won silver with a 2-1 record.
