Hall of Fame: Robert Dubeau

Robert Dubeau

Robert Dubeau has served as golf team program coordinator since 2017 after an 11-year stint as head coach. He re-launched the program in 2006 after a 34-year absence, and guided McGill to six appearances at the national championships, five for the men and one for the women. He has been involved with the golf team since retiring from his full-time post at McGill in 2005.

A 2016 inductee to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame, Dubeau had a 36-year administrative career at McGill, spending 29 years as director of athletics from 1976 to 2005, which was preceded by overseeing the campus recreation office. He played a major role in the $60 million expansion of McGill's sports facilities and under his leadership the annual athletics budget grew from $1.6 to $7.3 million. He was also instrumental in the implementation of athletic financial awards, Principal's Student-Athlete Honour Roll and the Hall of Fame. He oversaw the restructuring and financing of the varsity program and tripled the full-time coaching staff.

Dubeau also served as director of sports services for the organizing committee of the Montreal Olympics and was a member of the Canadian mission staff at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, as well as the FISU Games in Mexico City (1979), Bucharest (1981), Edmonton (1983) and Mallorca (1999). Born in Quebec City and raised in Montreal, he graduated from Sir George Williams University (BA '67) and McMaster (BPE '68), where he won the OQAA squash championship as an athlete in 1967-68.
