Jason Starr of Cote St. Luc, Que., was appointed general manager in 2018 after serving six years as head coach and field manager of the McGill University men's baseball team since 2012. He served as the third bench boss in team history, behind
Johnny Elias (1994 to 1995) and
Ernie D'Alessandro (1996 to 2011).
The 2018 season marks Starr's 18th year with the program, including four as a player. A lesser time commitment was cited as the reason for stepping down as field manager prior to the 2018 season after the addition of twins to his family.
A McGill graduate with a commerce degree in 2005, Starr coached the Redmen to four consecutive national championships (2014-2017) and a 136-48-2 record in 186 games overall since taking over as field manager in 2012.
Prior to that stint, he had spent seven campaigns as an infielders coach with the team.
During his tenure as an assistant to Ernie
D'Alessandro on the McGill coaching staff, the team won two national championships (2006, 2010). Starr also served as an assistant coach for Canadian junior squad, which won silver at the 2009
Maccabiah Games in Israel.
A former infielder with McGill from 2001 to 2004, Starr earned all-conference
honours in his senior campaign,
Starr also had 15 previously accumulated seasons of coaching experience, including seven years with the Lac St. Louis program (Mosquito, Bantam and Peewee) and seven campaigns as an infielders coach with the
Redmen. He was twice-named coach of the year in the
Dollard Amateur Baseball Association (2004 and 2006).
