MONTREAL — Second-ranked Concordia scored a pair of power-play goals and defeated McGill 5-1 in the opener of their RSEQ women's hockey best-of-three semifinal series at Ed Meagher Arena on Thursday.
McGill spent much of the night killing penalties, taking seven of the 11 infractions assessed. Concordia capitalized, finishing 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Martlets went 1-for-4.
The Stingers outshot the Martlets 32-9 and led 2-0 after the first period and 5-0 through 40 minutes.
Emilie Lavoie opened the scoring on the power play at 12:02 of the first period and Jessymaude Drapeau added another late in the frame. Emilie Lussier struck twice in the second period — once with the man advantage — before Lavoie added her second of the game as Concordia built a five-goal cushion.
McGill showed pushback in the third period, winning the stanza 1-0. Team captain Anika Cormier spoiled Jordyn Verbeek's shutout bid at 9:48, scoring on a wraparound from behind the net on the power play. India Benoit and Meganne Chailler drew assists on the play.
It was the 10th career goal for Cormier, an elementary education senior from Ste. Marie de Kent, N.B., who now has 27 points in 92 games with the Martlets.
Verbeek finished with eight saves on nine shots for the win, while Jade Rivard-Coulombe made 27 saves in defeat.
McGill now faces a must-win situation in Game 2 on Saturday at 3 p.m. at McConnell Arena. If necessary, a deciding game will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. back at Loyola.
In the league's other semifinal opener, the second-seeded Montreal Carabins edged third-place Bishop's 3-2 in overtime.

MONTRÉAL — Les Stingers de Concordia, classées deuxièmes au pays, ont inscrit deux buts en avantage numérique et ont défait les Martlets de McGill 5-1, jeudi soir, lors du premier match de leur série demi-finale deux de trois du RSEQ à l'aréna Ed Meagher.
McGill a passé une bonne partie de la rencontre à court d'une joueuse, écopant de sept des 11 pénalités décernées. Concordia en a profité avec un rendement de 2-en-7 en supériorité numérique, tandis que les Martlets ont fait 1-en-4.
Les Stingers ont dominé 32-9 au chapitre des tirs et menaient 2-0 après une période, puis 5-0 après 40 minutes de jeu.
Emilie Lavoie a ouvert la marque en avantage numérique à 12:02 du premier tiers et Jessymaude Drapeau a doublé l'avance en fin d'engagement. Emilie Lussier a touché la cible deux fois en deuxième période — dont un but en supériorité numérique — avant que Lavoie n'inscrive son deuxième du match pour porter la marque à 5-0.
Les Martlets ont toutefois montré du caractère au troisième vingt, remportant la période 1-0. La capitaine Anika Cormier a privé Jordyn Verbeek d'un blanchissage à 9:48 en marquant sur un tour du filet en avantage numérique. India Benoit et Meganne Chailler ont obtenu les aides.
Il s'agissait du 10e but en carrière pour Cormier, étudiante de quatrième année en enseignement primaire originaire de Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Elle totalise 27 points en 92 matchs avec McGill.
Verbeek a terminé la rencontre avec huit arrêts sur neuf tirs pour la victoire, tandis que Jade Rivard-Coulombe a repoussé 27 rondelles dans la défaite.
Les Martlets feront maintenant face à l'élimination lors du deuxième match, prévu samedi à 15 h à l'aréna McConnell. Si nécessaire, un match décisif sera disputé dimanche à 14 h au campus Loyola.
Dans l'autre demi-finale, les Carabins de Montréal, deuxièmes têtes de série, ont vaincu Bishop's 3-2 en prolongation.
