MONTREAL – Anika Cormier, an alternate captain with the McGill University women's hockey team, has been selected among a dozen student-athletes from across the country to participate in the Creating Coaches program, announced Tuesday by Hockey Canada and U SPORTS.

Cormier, a 21-year-old education senior from Ste. Marie de Kent, N.B., is a 5-foot-5 forward currently in her fourth season with the Martlets. She was recruited to McGill in 2022 out of Rothesay Netherwood School in New Brunswick.

Creating Coaches, launched in 2021 through a partnership between Hockey Canada, U SPORTS and the Hockey Canada Foundation, is designed to increase the number of women coaching across the country. Now in its fifth year, the initiative allows student-athletes to continue their U SPORTS playing careers while serving as assistant coaches with U13, U15 or U18 girls teams in their communities.

Each participant receives mentorship, training, education and an honorarium during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

This year's 12-member cohort includes representatives from all four U SPORTS conferences: Cormier (McGill), Grace Beer (Dalhousie), Sarah Bestic (Waterloo), Hayleigh Craig (Alberta), Cailey Davis (Toronto Metropolitan), Kara den Hoed (Wilfrid Laurier), Alexa Giantsopoulos (York), Payton Hargreaves (New Brunswick), Kaitlyn McKnight (Toronto), Angélique Proulx (Ottawa), Cassidy Rhodes (UBC) and Jordyn Verbeek (Concordia).

"We are very excited to expand the Creating Coaches program to welcome even more incredible student-athletes from across U SPORTS this season, thanks to the generous financial support of the Hockey Canada Foundation," said Marin Hickox, vice-president of women's and girls' hockey with Hockey Canada.

Since its inception, Creating Coaches has engaged student-athletes from 23 U SPORTS programs nationwide. 

The announcement coincides with National Coaches Week, which celebrates the impact of mentors in communities across the nation.

MONTRÉAL – Anika Cormier, capitaine adjointe de l'équipe féminine de hockey de l'Université McGill, a été sélectionnée parmi une douzaine d'étudiantes-athlètes de partout au pays pour participer au programme Creating Coaches, ont annoncé mardi Hockey Canada et U SPORTS.

Cormier, une étudiante de 21 ans en éducation originaire de Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, au Nouveau-Brunswick, est une attaquante qui mèsure 5 pieds et 5 pouces, qui en est actuellement à sa quatrième saison avec les Martlets. Elle a été recrutée à McGill en 2022 après avoir fréquenté l'école Rothesay Netherwood au Nouveau-Brunswick.

Lancé en 2021 grâce à un partenariat entre Hockey Canada, U SPORTS et la Fondation Hockey Canada, le programme Creating Coaches vise à augmenter le nombre de femmes entraîneuses à travers le pays. Maintenant dans sa cinquième année, l'initiative permet aux étudiantes-athlètes de poursuivre leur carrière sportive à U SPORTS tout en occupant le poste d'entraîneuse adjointe auprès d'équipes féminines U13, U15 ou U18 dans leur communauté.

Chaque participante bénéficie d'un mentorat, d'une formation, d'une éducation et d'une rémunération pendant les saisons 2025-2026 et 2026-2027.

« Nous sommes très heureux d'élargir le programme Creating Coaches afin d'accueillir encore plus d'étudiantes-athlètes exceptionnelles de partout au pays cette saison, grâce au généreux soutien financier de la Fondation Hockey Canada », a déclaré Marin Hickox, vice-présidente du hockey féminin et du hockey pour filles chez Hockey Canada.

Depuis sa création, le programme Creating Coaches a mobilisé des étudiantes-athlètes de 23 programmes U SPORTS à l'échelle nationale.

L'annonce coïncide avec la Semaine nationale des entraîneurs, qui célèbre l'impact des mentors dans les communautés à travers le pays.
