McGill student Gill and coach Carpenter named to Canada’s World Para Swimming team

MONTREAL – McGill University will be well-represented at the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore, as both Redbirds swimmer Jagdev Gill and head coach Peter Carpenter have been named to the national team by Swimming Canada. The prestigious event is scheduled for Sept. 21–27.

Gill, a 20-year-old science senior majoring in biology and mathematics, earned his selection after impressive performances at the recent Bell Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, B.C. The 6-foot-4 freestyle specialist from Brockville, Ont., qualified in both the 100-metre freestyle (55.01 seconds) and 50m freestyle (25.46). He will be making his debut at the senior international level. Gill, who enrolled at McGill in 2022 out of Brockville Collegiate Institute, previously swam for his club program, the Upper Canada River Otters.

"This is a tremendous honour for Jagdev and for our entire program," said Carpenter. "His dedication and work ethic have been unwavering, and it's exciting to see him earn this opportunity to represent Canada on the world stage."

Carpenter himself will be returning to international duty as a member of Canada's coaching staff, working under head coach Ryan Allen. It will be a busy summer for the veteran McGill bench boss, who was also named earlier this year to the national team coaching staff for the inaugural Canada–Great Britain Dual Meet, set for July 3–4 in Loughborough, England.

Entering his 17th season at the helm of the McGill swim program, Carpenter has built one of the country's most successful university teams. He was recently named coach of the year in the RSEQ conference for the 12th time, including six men's titles, and earned U SPORTS national coach-of-the-year honours this past season after guiding the McGill women's team to a program-best second-place finish at the national championship. He previously claimed U SPORTS coach-of-the-year honours on the men's side in 2019-20.

The Canadian squad heading to Singapore will feature 19 athletes—11 women and eight men—selected based on performances at the six-day national trials that concluded on Thursday. Among the headliners are multiple medallists from the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including Nicholas Bennett, Reid Maxwell and Danielle Dorris.

With a blend of proven veterans and emerging talent, Canada's coaching staff is aiming for strong results at the first major international event of the new Paralympic cycle.

McGill's presence in Singapore marks another proud chapter for the University's varsity swim program, which continues to produce high-performance athletes and coaches competing at the highest levels.
